1 . At the age of 23, he was sent to Pakistan on a mission.

2 . For one of the mission of Pakistan he has learn various language to show him as a Muslim like Urdu ,Punjabi language which is spoken in major part of Pakistan.

3 . From 1979 to 1989, while in military service, he passed on valuable information to RAW which was of great help to the Indian Defence Forces.

4 . While one of the mission in Pakistan he was kept in various jails, including Sialkot, Kot Lakhpat and in Mianwali jail for 16 years, where he contracted Asthma and TB.  He managed to secretly send letters to his family in India, which  revealed his poor health condition and the trauma faced by him in  Pakistani jails.

In one of his letters he wrote,

  “Kya Bharat jaise bade desh ke liye kurbani dene waalon ko yahi milta  hai?” 

 (Is this the reward a person gets for sacrificing his life for a  great nation like India)

• He joined the IPS in 1968 in the Kerala cadre .
• He had also termination of all 15 hijackings of Indian Airlines aircraft from 1971–1999.
• He went to Kashmir in 1990 and persuaded militants (like Kuka Parray) to become counter-insurgents targeting hardline anti-India terrorist .
• He retired in January as Director, Intelligence Bureau .
•   He was founder Chairman of the Multi Agency Centre and Joint Task Force on Intelligence .

On 30 May 2014, Doval was appointed as India’s fifth National Security Advisor.
